Dental Braces

Dental braces (also known as braces, or orthodontic brackets and wires) are devices used in orthodontics for either cosmetic or structural corrections to the teeth.
Often used in conjunction with other orthodontic appliances, braces serve to align and straighten teeth in order to improve a person’s bite and tooth position, while also working to improve overall dental health. They are commonly used to correct underbites, as well as malocclusions, overbites, open bites, deep bites, cross bites, crooked teeth, and various other flaws of the teeth and jaw.
At Dentistry @ 1000 Islands, we believe in the proper expansion of the palate and jaw to obtain optimum functional health rather than the typical surgical approach of serial extractions. We also believe in early childhood orthodontic intervention by guiding and modifying a child’s growth and development to achieve the best outcome with the minimum amount of intervention possible.
We, at Dentistry @ 1000 Islands, are experienced with both Invisalign and dental braces. Therefore, at the orthodontic consultation, we can give you options and will let you know which treatment can provide you with the best result. If you want to straighten your teeth and have a great smile, call us at (613) 498-4888 and inquire with our staff for a free consultation today.

Invisalign Brockville

What is it?

Invisalign is an orthodontic device that uses transparent, incremental aligners to adjust teeth as an alternative to traditional wire braces. These virtually invisible, removable, and comfortable aligners allow you to smile more during treatment as well as after. Invisalign clear aligners are made with 3D computer imaging technology and has been proven effective. However, not all patients are suitable for Invisalign treatment. Only a licensed Invisalign trained provider can determine if you will be a suitable candidate.

Why would I want it?

Not only are the aligners virtually invisible, they are removable, so you can eat and drink what you want while in treatment. Plus, brushing and flossing are no problem. They are also more comfortable than traditional braces, with no metal or wires, which also usually means you spend less time in your doctor's office getting adjustments.

How does it work?

You wear each set of aligners for about two weeks, removing them only to brush, floss, eat and drink anything other than water. As you advance your aligner with the next in the series, your teeth will move — little by little, day by day, week by week — until they have straightened to their designed final positions. we will see you about once every four to six weeks to ensure that your treatment is progressing as planned. Total treatment time averages about 6 to 15 months and the average number of aligners worn during treatment is between 5 to 30, but both will vary from case to case. If you want to straighten your teeth and have a great smile, call us at (613) 258-5200 and inquire with our staff for a free consultation today.
Dentistry @ Rockland is a convenient family friendly dentist clinic, provides complete exams, cleanings and fillings, tooth extraction, Emergency care, braces, teeth whitening, and local cosmetic dentistry services.

Bonding

Bonding is a dental term used to refer to the correction of aesthetic defects in your teeth using a composite resin in the colour and translucency of your existing teeth.

The procedure involves using an adhesive agent to bond the resin to the existing tooth structure and then is hardened with a curing light, shaped, contoured, and polished until it seamlessly and naturally blends into the rest of the oral aesthetic.

Composite bonding is a great solution to when small defects in teeth need to be addressed, such as chips, gaps, and spots.

Veneers

Veneers are thin shells placed over top of the existing tooth to cover wear, chips, misalignment, or discolouration.

Veneers are typically constructed from porcelain or resin and measure less than 1.5mm in thickness. They last ten to fifteen years, on average, and are a great solution for many people seeking to create a better smile that looks and feels perfectly natural.

Tooth Whitening

Tooth whitening is one of the most common forms of cosmetic dental procedures and can be done in office or at home.

In-home whitening treatments consist of a mouth tray custom made to fit you and a supply of our bleaching agent (usually containing hydrogen peroxide).

It's important to consult with our dentists prior to undergoing a tooth whitening procedure as not all teeth are suitable for this procedure, and tooth whitening treatment can cause sensitivity in some people.

If you are pregnant, it is strongly recommended that you avoid tooth whitening procedures for the duration of your pregnancy.

Crowns & Bridges

Dental crowns and bridges are used to correct significant dental defects, like filling up the gap resulting from a tooth extraction, or correcting a tooth that is discoloured, cracked, or injured.

Crowns

Dental crowns - sometimes also referred to as caps - are used to restore teeth that are broken, or are at high risk of breaking, due to old fillings or fractures.

Crowns are often recommended to fix teeth in the cases of extensive decay, injury, or root canal therapy. Crowns are usually made from noble alloys or porcelain and the final finish will look and feel very close to your natural teeth

If a crown is the right procedure for your dental needs, the procedure will start with taking an impression of the area that requires the crown(s). A temporary crown will be applied while the impression is sent to a dental laboratory where the final crown will be carefully constructed to fit perfectly onto your tooth. The final crown will be cemented into place and you'll enjoy a return to full oral functionality.

Bridges

Bridges are fixed, or non-removable prosthesis constructed to replace one or more missing teeth. The teeth on both sides of the existing space are used to attach the bridge to restore functionality and aesthetics. Materials used for this process are noble alloys, porcelain or porcelain fused to metal. Bridges are indicated whenever at least one tooth is missing. A bridge is composed of abutments and pontics.

Abutments are the supports for the bridge, consisting of crowns placed overtop of the teeth surrounding the empty space of one or more missing teeth.

Pontics are special crowns specifically designed to fill the span of the gap where one or more natural teeth are missing.

Periodontal Therapy

Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, is an infection of the tissues that surround and support your teeth. Periodontal disease is a leading cause of tooth loss in Canadian adults and could be greatly reduced through good oral hygiene along with regular dental check-ups where early detection can save the tooth before it becomes too decayed.

More than 75% of North Americans over 35 years of age have some form of periodontal disease. Although many are infected, few know they actually have the disease. In a recent study, 8 out of 10 people surveyed believed they did not have a periodontal disease; 7 out of 10 exhibited one or more symptoms.

Oral Surgery

Dental oral surgery is a specialty in the practice of dentistry that includes both the diagnosis as well as the surgical treatment of dental issues and disease affecting the hard and soft tissues of the head, mouth, teeth, gums, jaw, and neck.

Dental oral surgery frequently involves wisdom teeth removal, apicoectomy, TMJ disorders, facial trauma repair, corrective jaw surgery, oral pathology, dental implants, osseous tissue surgery, anesthesia, and bone grafts.

Extractions

Dental extractions become necessary when a tooth can't be saved, usually due to extensive decay where so much of the tooth structure is destroyed that restoration is no longer viable. Other reasons for teeth to be extracted include impacted or problematic wisdom teeth, as well as to make space for orthodontic treatment in some cases.

Fillings

Dental fillings are a type of tooth restoration where tooth decay exists but there is enough structure remaining that the tooth can be saved. In modern dentistry, strength and aesthetics can be combined to create a restored tooth that looks just like the orignal natural tooth. Dental fillings may also be used to repair a tooth that's fractured, broken, or worn down.

If a dental filling is required, the procedure will begin with preparing the affected teeth by removing any remaining decay and shaping the final cavity. A composite resin filling will then be applied and cured with a curing light. Finally, the completed filling will be polished to integrate seamlessly with the natural teeth.

While modern dentistry enables us to use materials for dental fillings that are both strong and natural appearing, fillings don't last forever and it's important for you to ensure that you continue regular check-ups to ensure that the dental filling continues to hold well. The dentist monitors the integrity of your fillings during regular exams and will recommend replacing a filling if a problem is detected.

Root Canal Treatment

When a tooth is severely decayed, infected, or broken, a root canal procedure can often save the tooth and extend its life for many more years.

To complete a root canal procedure, the dentist will access the pulp chamber in the crown of the tooth and reveal the root canals contained in the roots of the tooth. The dentist will then remove the infected nerve and shape the canals using special files to smooth the walls and ensure no pulp tissue or infection is left. The canals are then filled with a special material that seals off the root canals.

After a root canal procedure, the tooth can become brittle and to protect the tooth from fracture, it's often recommended that a crown be applied over the affected tooth.

Oral Sedation for Dental Phobia

Dental Anesthesia

If you feel uneasy about your dental visit and are looking for a safe alternative in Brockville you've come to the right place.

At Dentistry @ 1000 Islands your teeth can be fixed, sore gums restored, and your smile brightened without discomfort while you will sleep through your appointment. Have years of dental treatment in just one appointment. No more hiding your smile behind your hand or putting up with pain.
"Our goal is to provide you dental care without fear, pain or anxiety in Brockville. We meet with every patient to review their needs and desires. Together we will decide on the best option for you."
If you present one or more of the following conditions, dental anesthesia can help you:

            Fear and Anxiety
Nearly half of people with dental problems avoid dental care because of their fears and anxiety. Modern, safe anesthesia techniques allow the fearful patient to have dental procedures accomplished without the anxiety associated with dentistry.

Low pain threshold or very sensitive teeth
Many people perceive pain differently than others. Some experience the inability to get numb. With general anesthesia and sedation techniques, these patients will have the perception of pain altered and will be virtually pain free during the treatment.

            Gag reflexes
Some patients will gag before the smallest x-ray film is even placed in their mouth, or before they have a simple impression taken. Using anesthesia services even for the simplest procedures can eliminate the problems caused by gagging.

Limited time to complete dental care or in need of an extensive treatment
For sophisticated, and extended procedures such as multiple restorations, extractions, periodontal surgery and root canal therapy, anesthesia services provide increased patient comfort. Completing the treatment under general anesthesia will also minimize the need for multiple visits.

Children and most special needs patients who cannot cooperate during a normal dental procedure can also benefit greatly from anesthesia Brockville.
For physically and mentally challenged patients, and for individuals emotionally uncomfortable in the traditional dental office setting, anesthesia services can provide both a way to accomplish complete dental care as well as a more pleasant experience.

          Or if you:

Hate noises, smells and tastes associated with dental care
Are afraid or embarrassed about their teeth

          Benefits of Anesthesia in Brockville

Reduced or eliminated fear or anxiety.

You can tolerate longer dental procedures and thus reduce the number of times you have to come and see the dentist.
You are NOT paying specialty fees. Your cost is comparable to that of other general dentists. There is an additional cost for the anesthetic between.

              Will I be completely asleep?
What Type of Anesthesia is Used?
              How Will I Feel Afterwards?
Will My Benefits Cover Anesthesia Services?
What should I tell my dentist before receiving anesthesia?

Is anesthesia in the dental office safe?
              What are common side effects?
What can I do to ensure best results?

          How does sleep dentistry work?
When you arrive in our office you may be given a small pill to take an hour prior to your dental appointment. This will make you feel relaxed and a bit drowsy.
You will be escorted into a room and covered with a thick, warm blanket. You'll be connected to monitors to watch your vital signs. After you are comfortable, an experienced clinical team will take care of your dental needs. We will deliver your medications and you will fall asleep.

Twenty minutes after your treatment is completed you can go home to finish your comfortable, relaxing day.
          Will I be completely asleep?
The goal of the sedation is to provide you the most comfortable experience while receiving your dental treatment. Since you will be in a very deep relaxation state, you will not remember part or all of your appointment. You will feel that you slept through it.
What Type of Anesthesia is Used?

The type of anaesthesia used will depend upon the age and physical condition of the patient as well as the type and length of the surgery. The medications are completely individualized to each patient to ensure a pleasant and safe experience.
          How Will I Feel Afterwards?
It is common to sleep much of the afternoon, eat a light evening meal, and be completely recuperated by morning. You will be discharged awake and alert from the dental office and he will contact you that evening to make sure everything is all right. Complications of any sort are unusual and mild.
Will My Benefits Cover Anesthesia Services?
Whether or not your carrier reimburses you largely depends upon policy restrictions, maximum yearly benefits, and premiums paid by your employer. Our team will make every effort to assist you in obtaining the maximum benefit allowable under your policy provisions.

What should I tell my dentist before receiving anesthesia?
Your dentist needs to know about all medications that you are taking, any allergic reactions you've had to medicines in the past, and your past and present health conditions. It's important that you answer your dentist's questions completely and voice any concerns you might have. This way your dentist will be sure to tell you everything you need to know before receiving treatment. For example, in some cases, your anesthesia treatment may require that you suspend certain medications or abstain from eating or drinking for a period of time before the treatment.
Is anesthesia in the dental office safe?
Although taking any medication involves a certain amount of risk, the drugs that produce anesthesia are entirely safe when administered by a trained anesthesia provider. When treated by our dentists you will have the opportunity to ask questions about any procedure that you are not familiar with. Ask about alternatives, training, the doctor's commitment to continuing education and the credentials of other personnel in the dental office who might be assisting with your treatment. Good communication between the dentist and the patient is the best way of insuring safety.

          What are common side effects?
Drugs used for sedation rarely cause side effects such as nausea and vomiting, or prolonged dizziness as can be seen with general anesthesia.
What can I do to ensure best results?
You will need to be accompanied to and from the office by a responsible adult who will be able to help you walk and assist you in and out of your home, the office, and an automobile. They do not have to remain in the office throughout the whole procedure. They can go and run errands and come back in time to pick you up. This person will need to stay with you for several hours at home because even though you will leave the office awake and alert, you will still be sedated and will need assistance to move about. If left alone, you could fall and injure yourself. It is important that you do not take any additional medication or drugs, prescription or otherwise, because there could be a serious reaction between your drugs and the medicines we give you.
Please follow these additional instructions to ensure your well being during and after the appointment:

No eating or drinking after midnight the night before your appointment.
No eating or drinking the morning before your appointment.
No sedatives of any kind, including alcohol, 24 hours before or after the appointment.
No stimulants, including caffeine and nicotine, 24 hours before or after the appointment.
Wear loose and comfortable clothing for your dental visit.

Make sure you are not pregnant before undergoing sedation.
No nursing a baby for 24 hours after the appointment.
No driving a car or operating hazardous devices for 24 hours after the appointment.
No walking stairs, exercising, or heavy lifting for 24 hours after the appointment.
Do not make any important decisions (work) for 24 hours after the appointment.

After your visit, you will remember very little. Expect to go home and enjoy a good night's sleep. If you have any questions, please call our office.

Dental Implants

Dental implants serve to replace the root of a missing tooth. This is then used to support a crown, bridge, or dentures. Dental implants are often a great option in the case where at least one tooth is missing.

The root-form implant is the most common type of dental implant and consists of three main components:

Implant screw - Constructed from titanium and is surgically placed in the bone. Titanium is accepted by the body extremely well and fuses with the bone (called osseointegration) during the healing process.
Abutment - This is a metal collar that attaches to the top of the implant screw and is the base for a crown, bridge, or denture.
Crown - The crown is the manufactured tooth that fits on top of the abutment. Bridges and dentures can also be secured to the abutment. The placement of the crown, bridge, or denture is the final step of the dental implant process.

Dentures are broadly divided into the categories of complete dentures and partial dentures.

Complete dentures are used when all teeth in an arch are missing, and partial dentures are used when there are still natural teeth present in the arch. Both complete dentures and partial dentures can provide a return to full oral function for patients who have lost teeth.

Complete dentures consist of an acrylic base to imitate gum tissue and the teeth attached to the base that can be made of acrylic or porcelain. The denture base is made to closely fit the contours of the arch to ensure the denture is stable during normal oral functions such as eating, speaking, or swallowing.
Partial dentures
Partial dentures can be made with a metal framework and teeth attached in the areas where the natural teeth are missing. The metal framework also has clasps that extend out and fit around some of the existing teeth. The combination of the framework and the clasps keep the partial denture stable during normal oral functions.
